Before you choose a product, spend a weekend watching the space. A west-facing terrace in Bellevue Hill is comfortable at nine and unusable at four; a north-facing one is generous in winter and punishing in January. Note the hour the shadow line crosses the table, and note which side the low sun comes from, because low sun is the part that overhead shelter cannot solve.
That single observation usually decides the shape of the answer. Overhead heat asks for an awning. Low glare from the side asks for something vertical. Most Sydney terraces need both, in that order — the mistake we see most often is a homeowner buying a beautiful roof structure and then discovering the four o’clock sun still arrives horizontally through the open end.
The second question is structural, and it is the one that quietly rules options in or out. A masonry wall above the opening gives you the most freedom. A timber-framed wall, a cantilevered balcony above, or a heritage sandstone facade each narrow the field, and a strata building may narrow it further. This is why we measure before we recommend: the same terrace can suit a folding-arm awning or an in-track outdoor blind depending entirely on what is behind the render.

Shade is usually bought in February and judged in July, which is when a poorly planned outdoor room becomes obvious. A space that only works when the sun is out is a summer room, not an outdoor room. The fix is to think about the two edges of the year at the same time as the middle: something you can retract completely so winter sun reaches the glass, and something you can close on the windward side so a July lunch is still possible.
That is why retractability matters more than coverage. A fixed roof gives you shade in January and a dark, cold living room in June, because it blocks the low winter sun the house actually wants. The same logic applies to the glazing behind the terrace.
